Get the necessary tools

Making a fan out of paper wouldn’t be possible without some important tools. So, we have some of those you need to be listed below. However, depending on the style of fan you intend to make, some tools might not be on this list, and some will be.

If you don’t find any you need for your own fan style, it is imperative that you get it to make your craft work appealing and alluring.

  • Ruler or protractor
  • Needle and thread

  • Soldering iron and copper wire

The common design of the paper-made fan you will find online is the portable one that you can easily fold and insert in your pocket. That is much easier to do even all you’ve got is just a paper. However, we are focusing on teaching you how to make a standing fan out of paper.

So, let’s get started.

Cut out the cardboard in the right shape

To do this, you need to have a mental picture of whatever you want to build. Without that, you are likely to end up with an unsuccessful task. So, let’s take the picture above as the benchmark here to help us through the process.

Step one

Pick up cardboard and cut out a rectangle shape of the cardboard, just like the image below. You need a ruler and a pencil to do that. Ensure you get a straight line, and it has to be measured. Now that you’ve got a straight line, you should go ahead with cutting the cardboard with a cutter. Ensure you have two of the rectangular board, but one has to be taller than the second.

Step two

After you have cut out the two rectangle boards, you go on with the next. Cut out two boards like the image 1 below and ensure it is two of same size and shape. You will have to join it together with the rectangular board you cut out in the first step using glue. After the whole joining. You must arrive at image 2.

Step three

You need to cut a big rectangular board and cut a section where you can easily push and glue the outcome of your second step into. The image below explains that better for you to understand. Here you need a ruler and pencil to mark out the area you want to cut out, and then you go ahead using your cutter to do the rest of the work.

Step four

Now that you’ve done that, you need to go on with the rest of the rectangular box by cutting other areas and then glue them together. The upper has to align with the upper, while the board beside has to be of the same size.

For the sake of the design we are doing, you need to cut out a small part on the board to accommodate the DC switch. The image below shows two DC switches, and that is because the second was added to increase the speed of the fan due to the fact that a low voltage of battery was used.

Here I suggest you use a 9v battery. Just cut out one section following the sample in the image below.

Installing the fan blade and motor

You need to pick up your device, such as a drilling machine, to punch a hole through the cardboard, as seen in the image below.


After you’ve drilled the hole, you should insert the motor from the back, as seen in the image below. You should add your wire to the motor. One red and the other is black.

Now, you should pick up the drilling machine and reach out to any cover of bottled water and drill a hole at the side in three places with considerable distance between each, and also drill one hole in the middle.

Insert three lightweight sticks on the side of the bottle you drilled, and then place the bottle on the pin of the motor and ensure it is properly glued. The image below should be the outcome of the process I just explained.

The next step is for you to cut out the blade of the fan. You should check the image below to know the exact format. However, you can choose to go on with any blade design of your choice. So cut out three blades and glue them to the stick and ensure it stays firm.

Install the battery with the DC motor and switch button

The next and last process is for you to connect the battery with the motor and DC switch. You need to get a Hi-watt 9V battery for a transistor radio. The red wire is to be connected to the positive while the black is on the negative.

For the connection, please take note of the process. You need two red wires and one black. The top and bottom of each wire must be exposed. The black has to be connected on the negative of the battery, while the second has to be connected to one side of the DC motor.

While the red wire is on with the positive of the battery, make use of the second red wire to connect with the second part of the motor, and the other part of the wire has to be joined with the red wire from the battery. The image below shows the connection process.
